James: Deep End Faith – Faith that Works When You’re Over your Head

In the storms and scattering, God’s people need a strong faith, one that is not propped up by our circumstances or cultural context, but one that works no matter what, and especially when we are in over our heads. And this is exactly the kind of faith God has given us! We will learn from a former skeptic, the brother of Jesus himself, who writes one of the least likely and most dangerous letters in the New Testament to help us realize the full potential of our faith.

Hearing Jesus

In a world where there is constant noise – the opinions of mainstream media, the echo chambers of social media, the chatter of public discourse, and even just the clutter of all the on-demand media that entertains us – believers need to hear Jesus loud and clear. Jesus says “his sheep follow him because they know his voice” (John 10:4). The Gospel of Luke invites us to plug into the words of Jesus and turn up the volume. And, of course, Jesus calls us not only to hear his words, but to put them into practice (Luke 6:46). When we do that, our lives will have a steady and sure foundation.

Behold Him

Imagine seeing God. It was not just unlikely, it was unthinkable. “No man can see me and live,” the Lord said to Moses. But then about 1500 years later, we read “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18). To see Jesus was to see nothing less than God revealed – “veiled in flesh the Godhead see!” – and how glorious it was! “We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). And so we “hail the Incarnate Deity” who was “pleased as man with men to dwell.” And yet, what does it really mean that God became flesh? What does it mean for us today? If ever there was a time to pause and reflect on these questions, it is today. If ever there was a time to pause and behold Immanuel in a manger, to really ponder and wonder at His coming, it is this Christmas. We will turn our eyes to the manger and learn from some of the texts in the New Testament that describe the reality and the reasons for the Incarnation.

And as we look into the Gospel of Luke, we see some very inspiring and instructive scenes of worship. Let’s look through these windows into worship and grow together as worshippers!

Good Different

As followers of Jesus, we have been made different to make a difference. This world is not our home, and we can be very lonely, especially when suffering for our faith. But we are loved by God, and by his strength and grace that enables us to joyfully trust and obey Him, we can live for Christ in a way that compels the world to reconsider how it views us and Jesus. God intends for us to be different in a way that presents a good and compelling alternative to others in the world.
