We are FAMILY

…In humility, value others above yourselves, not looking out for your own interests, but each of you looking out for the interests of others.

-Philippians 2:3-4

I was blessed to speak in both the Elementary and Middle School Chapels on Tuesday and I focused on the school’s theme for this year: We Are Family! It’s a familiar expression, but rather profound if you think about it. When we talk about the students and staff of Forcey Christian School, we are talking about 400 or so people who do not share the same blood, genes, or DNA on the inside, and who are very different in appearance, personality, and interest on the outside!

So, what makes a group of people a “family”? In my immediate family, I have children born on three different continents to four different birth mothers, and yet all six of my children are considered “family”! Of course, all those who receive Jesus, believing He died for our sins and rose again, are born into God’s forever family (John 1:12)! But even then, we still have to act like family! Philippians 2:1-11 reminds us of how to do that – it will take sacrifice! We must look out for one another, not just ourselves.

As a football coach in my hometown used to say, FAMILY means Forget About Me, I Love You! Like Jesus who gave His life for us, we must say “no” to ourselves at times in order to say “yes” to others. When everyone looks to serve those around them, even in sacrificial ways, then we can truly say we are FAMILY! And I am so blessed by how I already see so many in our Forcey Christian School family doing just that!
