Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

-Hebrews 4:14

There are reasons people lose track of Jesus. For the original readers of the book of Hebrews, there were people trying to convince them that Jesus wasn’t enough – that there were other, better approaches to spiritual life. They needed to be reminded that Jesus is greater – that He is God, that He is God with us, that He is God for us, that He still was and always would be the One their hearts were created for. “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,” they were encouraged.

I believe students of every generation face unique temptation to distract and discourage them from following Jesus. In our day, students are often given the impression that Christianity does more harm than good, or at least that Christian thinking is outdated and irrelevant. As I prepare to speak at this year’s 8th grade retreat, I am excited to remind students that Jesus is still God, He is still good, and we still need to fix our eyes on Him! And He has an answer – the best answer – for every problem and issue in our world today.

I pray that our students – and every follower of Jesus – can hold their head high in this world knowing that our Savior is still “the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” and His life is the light the world needs! May we hold firmly to the faith we profess!
